SAN / NAS
The need for data consolidation, centralized storage and faster and more efficient data access in enterprise networks has led to NAS and SAN storage technology. Which one you need depends on your applications. High performance, bandwidth-intensive applications need the availability and performance of a SAN. Other applications, for which many people need to access the same, universal information, benefit most from a NAS, which provides the fastest and easiest way to reach this data. Simac offers a wide range of storage management solutions. With our expertise in both SAN and NAS, we provide a full-service: from pre-project consulting (TCO and ROI analyses), to storage network design and implementation. We can provide medium and large environments with tailor-made solutions to ensure that your precious data is as safe as it can be. But storage is nothing without the related services. We provide integrated and centralized backup and restoration, archiving, staging (HSM) and data replication services.
Simac's High Availability Services can help you improve critical ICT systems availability, help move you even closer to a continuous operations environment by reducing unplanned outages and reducing or potentially eliminating planned outages, and help lower the cost associated with downtime. Simac can help you achieve your business availability goals by identifying availability issues, inhibitors and exposures, delivering a comprehensive set of recommended improvements and tailored solutions. The decisions are endless and there are pros and cons to any approach. Making a spending decision is complicated as it is hard to pinpoint what's prone to failure. Many companies only invest in 80% of the solution, putting everything they have on continuity at risk because they are unaware of the final 20.
Simac advises you throughout the whole solution definition and planning process, to ensure you the level of uptime availability you require. We design, implement, and service the right uptime availability solution for your company, from fault-tolerant systems, delivering 99,999% uptime, over high-availability clusters and solutions for multitier architecture on client-server models, to storage area networks.
It is imperative that your business has immediate access to new and archived data while protecting it from disaster and business system outages. Your distributed and web based applications must be constantly available and their data updated in real time. Your branch offices and mobile users rely on up-to-date information to make sound business decisions. Simac's consultants and engineers work with you to assess your data availability needs and to develop replication solutions that meet your requirements and your budget. They will build solutions that provide server based asynchronous, real time replication of files, directories, volumes, shares and registry keys from source to target systems for Windows environments, providing a remote, consistent copy of your data at all times.
Our professionals will work with you to analyze your current computing and storage environment, understand your business goals, and assess your storage management capabilities. Based on this information we’ll provide you with our recommendations, a statement of work to be performed, and an estimate to design and implement the recommended solution.
Design and Implementation Services
Our technical staff comes in to design a data replication strategy that meets your business requirements, ensuring that the solution is neither under- nor over-engineered for your particular business need. Ofcourse, we implement your solution with the least disruption of your business processes.
Backup and restore
Backup and restore services are designed to provide managed storage capacity and other cost-effective solutions to help increase your data availability and protect your critical information from accidental loss or destruction. Today, many backup operations involve tape drives and tape robotics.Tape technologies are still favourite because tape-media can be remotely stored for disaster recovery purposes, and comply best with legal regulations for separate data stores. Now it's becoming feasible to enhance these tape-based solutions by incorporating disk-based data protection techniques. A combined disk and tape backup solution provides impressive benefits, including performance enhancements and cost savings.
Although disk is not likely to replace tape in backup and restore operations, the technology can play a valuable role in reducing your backup window. For example, you can quickly execute backups from disk to disk, and then push the data off to tape for longer term or off-site storage.
Understanding the business requirements of data allows Simac to provide fully integrated solutions to meet our clients' expectations. Simac has experience in tape, disk and tapeless backups using a variety of technologies and softwares.
As your data volumes continue to grow you'll inevitably reach the point where you need more backup storage capacity than single tape drives provide. This is when tape media automation becomes a necessity and you need to look at a tape library.
Tape media automation complements backup centralisation very well and the two are often implemented together.
Simac's knowledge in tape automation allows creating solutions that enable clients to increase online data capacities whilst being assured of appropriate back up. Simac has experience in autoloader, modulator and enterprise tape libraries.
The amount of unstructured and semi-structured information in the enterprise is growing rapidly, doubling every year, by some estimates. Commonly used office productivity suites, such as Microsoft Office and Lotus SmartSuite, generate an enormous amount. With the exception of a few specialized industries, most IT organizations have tended to leave the management of this type of information in the hands of end users, or, at best, small-unit managers.
DLM looks at the data and its meta-data. It will classify these data based on age, size, type, location, etc. and will perform an action based upon these criteria. Actions can be deletion or archival and even suppression of duplicates. DLM will solve some of your storage issues. It will NOT help you decide on the value of your data.
ILM will look at the broader picture. It will take into account which application generated the data and who created it. ILM is a real-world strategy to cope with the growing amount of data. There is a world of difference between ILM, DLM and SRM. One might see DLM as a subset of ILM and SRM as an enabler of both. There are as many roads to ILM as there are storage vendors. New technologies like virtualisation of storage, networks and servers, and new types of storage like SATA systems are enablers. Yet, each vendor emphasizes on its own strengths.
Benefits of ILM:
- Getting the information flow under control improves overall security in a big way. Especially if combined with identity management.
- ILM brings efficiency and control to your storage environment. It will reduce TCO.
- Backup and recovery protocols and procedures can be truly based on information value.
- The possibility to search based on the text that is stored inside documents improves end-users satisfaction, as well as that of the IT staff.
- New regulations from the government can easily be met with ILM in place.
Steps towards ILM:
- The infrastructure must be flexible as well as granular and resilient. This is largely dependent on virtualization approaches and consolidation. Simac is one of the best partners for all your infrastructure optimisations. We will help you with SAN and NAS, tape, servers, storage tiering,... and the software stack around it.
- Data movement and storage optimization must be automated. Due to rapidly changing business conditions and service requirements, optimizing a storage environment without the benefit of automated and policy-based data movement is an incredibly time-consuming and close-to-impossible task. This is closely linked to the Simac credo that ICT must be as easy to use as water, gas and electricity. Simac thinks that DLM and SRM are necessary but not-sufficient steps into this direction.
- The creation and management of comprehensive and rich metadata is a key enabler of ILM. Many applications already have appropiate metadata. Exchange for example. Mail is a major pain point for many customers. Solutions do exist and Simac has the expertise to help you with these (point)-solutions on mail, file-management and certainly workflow/archiving through the Simac Document Solutions subsiduary.
